Objectives
A one-day “brainstorming” session was jointly convened on 10 May 2013 by the ASEAN Studies Center and the Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University. The session brought together some 20 academics from all 10 ASEAN members to examine ASEAN energy and environmental challenges, and to consider whether ASEAN Energy Market Integration (AEMI) would provide an efficient way of addressing those challenges within the framework of the forthcoming AEC.
Outcomes
The participants agreed that AEMI was the way forward within the framework of the AEC. They formed themselves into the AEMI Group, and pledged to work together across institutions to develop the rationale for such an approach, assess the benefits it would deliver, design its architectural structure and formulated a strategy to deliver it. They identified the studies and analytical work needed to make the case for AEMI, and agreed on a division of labour to deliver those objectives within one year.
