The AEMI Initiative originated when the ASEAN Studies Center and the Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University, convened its inaugural meeting in 2013, which also created the AEMI Group.  During its first years of operation (2013-2014), the AEMI Initiative received academic support and full funding from Chulalongkorn University.  The ASEAN Studies Center still co-ordinates and houses the initiative, with continued support from the Faculty of Economics.  From December 2014 to June 2016, the AEMI Initiative was funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) participated as a Partner.

Chulalongkorn University Chulalongkorn University was created in March 1917 by H.M. King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) and named after his father H. M. King Chulalongkorn (Rama V).  It is Thailand’s top university and includes nineteen faculties, a graduate school, a School of Sports Science, three colleges (Population Studies, Petroleum & Petrochemical and Public Health Science) as well as the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration, providing more than 80 international programmes, including a Masters of Arts in South East Asian Studies.  Chulalongkorn University is also home to 22 Centers of Excellence and 108 Research Units, national and international   In addition, the university has been awarded a national research grant for research in seven core clusters:  Advanced Materials, Aging Society, Emerging Health Risks, Climate Change, Energy, Food and Water and Human Security.  Each year, Chulalongkorn University welcomes around 11,000 new students from ASEAN and beyond.  Among its current 39,000-strong student body, some 2,500 are enrolled in international programmes, 300 are visiting exchange students, and 250 are international students from Europe, the United States, Australia and Asia. The university’s objective is to achieve the level of excellence to qualify as a “World Class National University”.
ASEAN Studies Center, Chulalongkorn University The ASEAN Studies Center (ASC) was created in May 2011 to develop ASEAN academic networks and to disseminate knowledge about ASEAN through research, projects, education and training. It is linked to the ASEAN University Network, Chulalongkorn University, which consists of 26 members from all ASEAN countries. The ASEAN Studies Center has supported the AEMI Initiative since its inception in 2013.  Another project supported by the center is the “ITAAC @ CU”, involving ASEAN research, scholarships, youth exchange, visiting scholars and ASEAN conferences.
Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) (Dec 2014- Jun 2016) The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs was established in 1959. The institute has, for more than 50 years, been a leading community for research and communications about international affairs of relevance to Norway. Through NUPI’s more than 55-year history, research activity has covered a wide field, while the institute has adapted to what both the Norwegians and the international community have demanded. In Norway, NUPI has also been a centre for information on foreign policy issues through seminars, conferences and publications. Many employees, some of who have served in various governments, have also contributed to a number of public tasks. The institute has also trained a large number of Norwegian and foreign students through Master’s and PhD programmes.
